The recent long awaited period of good weather across most of the country, and especially in the north of England has witnessed a considerable increase in visitor numbers to the Trans Pennine Trail.

Commenting on this, Trail Officer Les Ford said, ‘the fact that the TPT is gaining country-wide recognition is clearly boosting general, overall visitor numbers, but the hot weather over the last few days has certainly been an additional contributory factor in the number of users.’

‘The fact that we have enjoyed excellent weather over the entire weekend has also tempted out more people than usual, especially casual walkers and riders around well known access spots and areas of particular scenic beauty. All the statistics are not yet available but it looks as if the past five to ten days will see us breaking records in terms of trail users,’ he added

With the current spell of settled, hot conditions now predicted to last well into this week it looks as if Les’ prediction could well be right.

Anyone wishing to use the TPT, which runs from Southport to Hornsea and from Leeds and York to Chesterfield is reminded that the trail has easy access at many points along its length and is free to all users. All parts of the trail can be used by walkers and cyclists and most sections can be used by horse riders. Wheelchair users are also catered for in many areas with many long, flat sections purposely designed for those with mobility difficulties.
